You are getting sleepy. You are getting sleepy. Not! Wake up and read this article. It's World Hypnotism Day! "Hypnosis is a heightened state of awareness," explained Jason Linett, a hypnotist in Old Town Alexandria at Virginia Hypnosis. "It's not a sleep state. It's about uncovering your mind's real potential." This time of year, Linett's business is booming thanks to the popularity of hypnosis when it comes to keeping New Year's resolutions like quitting smoking and losing weight, he said. Linett, who is originally from Virginia Beach, has a theatrical background and started doing stage hypnosis as entertainment. "But there was a lot more going on there than I understood so I got more into professional hypnotherapy training." He now works with clients in his N. Pitt St. office to help them keep their resolutions or to conquer phobias such as a fear of flying. He's even helped a golfer improve his game. But he enjoys the entertainment side of his skill and performs for high schools and at corporate venues to show an audience the power of hypnosis while having fun. For example, he might hypnotize someone who thinks she is watching a funny movie in a theater and who will laugh at a key word. "I've performed at T.C. Williams [High School] twice and I always make sure my show is appropriate for the crowd and absolutely clean and safe," he said. "I think it's great that I can help change people's lives but can also entertain." Click here to see a clip of Linett talking to an audience before a show. Hypnosis often is misrepresented in movies and television. Don't stare at that swinging pocket watch or you may just be off to do your master's evil bidding. Watch the crazy antics ensue. Think 1999 movie cult classic "Office Space," in which a disgruntled company worker who gets "stuck" in hypnosis gives new meaning to the concept of the Peter Principle – the idea that in business, workers are promoted into jobs with duties they don't have the skills to fulfill. Linett says he doesn't mind the depictions because it introduces an audience to the concept of dealing with the subconscious mind. But contrary to many portrayals, "you can't get stuck in hypnosis," he said. "It's more about achieving what you want."
